Word of Mouth
Remember, the Wild Salmon Circle isn't so much an organization, but a network of concerned citizens like you standing up and making their voices heard. Help spread the word -- Talk to five of your friends or family members about the importance of wild salmon in BC and get them to join the Wild Salmon Circle. Let's all stand together and create the healthy future with plentiful wild salmon that we all want to see.
April 2, 2010
Dear friends of wild salmon,
It's April already, and we have the Olympics and our successful rally behind us -- and some very exciting events ahead. Thanks to those of you who came out for our Olympic rally, volunteered, and supported it by spreading the word. This earned headline stories in the Norwegian media, which is what needed to happen.
The situation for wild salmon is not looking good for the coming year and that makes your involvement and action more important and urgent than ever.
The Cohen Judicial Inquiry is proceeding apace, and we will be notifying you when the time comes for citizen input, but for now there are some important actions you can take below. New research shows that the politically active are the happiest folks! So let's continue to "Grow the Circle, and Turn the Tide" for wild salmon. Tell your friends and we'll give them an action a month to make real progress on this issue. Thanks for your continued support!

Before the Get Out Migration gets going, here are two action items. Please pick your favourite and do it today.
1. Stop Lobbyists of the Salmon Feedlots from Gutting the Fisheries Act
We've received word that the industry is right now lobbying hard to have the Fisheries Act "adjusted" to accommodate the disastrous practices of these farms -- like installing high-power underwater lights that attract juvenile salmon smolts, herring and other forage fish into the pens, where they easily become free food for the feedlot salmon.
Download and send this card addressed to Fin Donnelly, West Coast Fisheries Critic on the Federal Standing Committee on Fisheries and Oceans. The card states that we do not want to see the Fisheries Act degraded in favor of Norwegian fish farmers.
Alexandra Morton's successful lawsuit against the BC government, regulation of salmon farms is slated to pass to the federal agency Fisheries and Oceans Canada. As Alex writes: "When fish farms move to federal jurisdiction it is paramount they NOT be protected again from all the Canadian fishing regulations. They will have to turn off their lights and cannot have wild fish in their pens any longer. Their packers will have to be licensed, they will be subject to the same laws as our other commercial and sport fisheries."
2. Emergency Action to Protect This Year's Migrating Salmon: Clear the Farms in the Wild Salmon Narrows
This year's out-migrating salmon need emergency help: the removal of open-net salmon farms from the Wild Salmon Narrows.
With the Georgia Strait Alliance and other key groups, we're calling for the long-term removal of all five farms from this bottleneck in the Strait of Georgia (the north and east sides of Quadra Island). This is a first step in getting all these disease-and-lice-breeding farms out of our waters.
Here's how you can help immediately: make a 2-minute phone call to your MP today and ask them how they're ensuring that we don't have another salmon collapse this year. Tell them that you want all five salmon farms around Quadra Island removed immediately to protect out-migrating smolts.
Some other ideas for what to say:
Farmed salmon must not trump BC's wild salmon.
In light of the projected reports of low returns for 2010, government and industry MUST keep the out-migrating routes free from contaminating parasites and disease. That means getting rid of salmon farms on critical routes.
We must not repeat the disaster of the Atlantic cod fisheries here on the west coast
Also THIS WEEK: Join in solidarity with Salmon Talks Lillooet, a coalition of local St'at'imc and non-Native citizens, biologists, and others. Salmon Talks will be "visiting" their Lillooet DFO offices at 10am on Wednesday, April 7 to demand that three of the five farms in the Narrows -- Venture Point, Sonora and Cyrus Rocks -- be immediately harvested of their salmon to protect wild salmon smolts that are already en route. Salmon Talks is asking for citizens to contact their regional DFO with this demand on April 7. Contact them at [salmontalks (at) gmail.com] if you want to participate in Lillooet or in your own region, or if you have an idea for an action.

Volunteers Needed for Victoria Rally (May 8th)
Alexandra Morton is leading a 500km march from Sointula to Victoria to demand that open-net salmon farms be removed from BC waters. Inspired by Gandhi's Salt March, Alex is asking salmon citizens to join her for part or all of her "Get Out Migration" -- 'get out' as in 'Get these feedlots out of our waters!' and as in 'Citizens get out and raise your voices for salmon!'
The Wild Salmon Circle is helping to organize the climactic rally at the end of Alex's long journey on Saturday, May 8th -- and we need volunteers! If you live in or near Victoria and want to help us send a loud message to the federal government about salmon conservation, we want to hear from you. Please send an email to: [wildsalmoncircle (at) gmail.com] with the subject: 'Victoria Rally.'
Tentative plans are for the rally to occur in the Victoria inner harbour area, with all of us joining her migration on both land and sea (boats and kayaks).
"The Fraser River Ripple Effect launches April 1, 2010" -- To raise awareness and funds for wild salmon conservation, Michelle Nickerson and a friend will swim a 1400km relay of the Fraser River this summer. Their effort launched April 1st with the Poisson D'Avril Campaign: in English April 1st is April Fools, while in French it is Poisson D'Avril -- April Fish. During the month of April people will wear and encourage others to wear fish buttons and paper fish just like we wear poppies and pink ribbons because "We can no longer be so Foolish with our Fish".
