A new year and a new decade have begun, bringing both new hope and new challenges for wild salmon. With the dedication and hard work I’ve seen from people across the province and beyond, I have no doubt that together we can make this the decade where wild Pacific salmon become abundant once again. In this newsletter you’ll find updates on the Wild Salmon Circle website, our brand new constitution (really much more exciting than you’d think), and upcoming events including another rally when all the world will be watching! I hope you’ll check it all out.

February Rally for Wild Salmon!
Wild Salmon Circle will be hosting another rally on February 20th, 2010 and we hope to see you there! Our focus for this rally (which makes it different from the other ones) is the fact that 92% of BC’s salmon farms are owned my Norwegian companies. With the world watching and Norwegian media around for the Olympics, we want to inform the Norwegian citizenry - who may not be aware of the Norwegian companies' encroachment into Canadian waters – what is happening here in BC. Emphasis will be on awareness, and not placing blame on Norwegians themselves or to have anything against their athletes.
With fish farm problems rife in Norway now as well, the situation is ripe for change. According to Norway’s daily financial newspaper, "....lice have crawled up the political agenda and up the inside of the trouser leg of Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg."

We would like to remind everyone that WSC is a citizens-led organisation. As such, this allows us, like many citizen organisations, to operate free of restraints and influences from other associations.
Our constitution clearly shows not only our structure but also the route we want to travel. "Grow the Circle. Turn the Tide", an axiom adopted right from the start, has now been given a clear direction.
It is our fervent hope that other Wild Salmon Circles will be formed in other parts of our Province; remaining active until the protection of British Columbia's iconic Wild Salmon is assured. Also, since there is no reason this model could not be adopted further afield, our constitution offers the public a clear framework and focus to assist in the formation of other groups. With everyone working on the same page, the advantage to the public would clearly be the ability to apply maximum pressure on industry and governments when and where necessary.
Unfortunately, the whole constitution is just too long to post here, but you can check it out on our website under 'About Us'. However, I will leave you with our three 'Purposes':
- The primary purpose of the WSC is to provide a voice to the members of the public concerned with the current state and management of B.C.'s salmon fishery;
- The WSC will seek to ensure an immediate end to open-containment salmon farming in B.C.'s waters; and
- The WSC seeks to protect the health and integrity of wild salmon generally, including individual salmon runs.
